VITAL work to repair the roof and south porch at Newport’s St Woolos Cathedral is under way with builders about to start re-tiling the roof.

Builders, who began restoration work at St Woolos Cathedral two weeks ago, have repaired internal walls and laid a new floor.

And scaffolding has now gone up outside ready for tiling to begin.

The Reverend Mark Soady, a minor canon at the cathedral, said: “We’re very pleased with the work done so far. You can already see that’s it’s making a difference.

“Now more delicate work to the outside of the cathedral will begin.”

Supporters of the cathedral are also celebrating news that the repair fund has topped the £105,000 mark.
