Assembly Minister to Visit as Cathedral Appeal Reaches Second Birthday

News date published: 23rd June 2008

Following the surprise resignation of Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM, late on Friday night (18th July), as Minister for Heritage the planned Ministerial visit to learn more about the restoration programme for Newport Cathedral has been postponed until a new minister is appointed.

Commenting Fr Mark Soady said, “While we are keen to meet the Minister responsible we realise that these things happen in politics”.

As the cathedral prepares to mark the second Anniversary of the launch of its restoration appeal, it has been announced today that the Welsh Assembly Minister for Heritage Rhori Glyn Thomas AM is to visit Newport Cathedral on July 21st to discuss the Cathedral’s restoration programme.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas, a non-conformist Minister of Religion has not previously visited the Cathedral. His predecessor as Minister with responsibilities for heritage visited the cathedral in early 2006.

Welcoming the visit Fr Mark Soady said, “We are pleased that the Minister is taking the time to come and see and hear what we are doing to ensure this ancient building is maintained and restored for future generations to benefit from it”.
Appeal Organisers hope the total raised will go over the £400,000 mark in time for the anniversary in early July. The anniversary itself will be marked by a service of thanksgiving at the cathedral at 7pm on July 4th.
