Cathedral Appeal goes to the House of Lords

News date published: 10th June 2008

The High Sheriff of Gwent, Mrs Judith Child JP is to organise a Lunch in the House of Lords in aid of Newport Cathedral’s Restoration Appeal.

The Cathedral needs to arise £2.5 million to restore the medieval roof tiles and beams and treat the flaking stonework. Phase 1 of the work has been completed and the Appeal has so far raised just under £400,000.

The Lunch to be hosted by Lord Kinnock ( former Islwyn MP Neil Kinnock ) will take place on Monday, September 29th.

Lord Kinnock said, “I strongly support the Appeal to restore this magnificent building, which in one form or another has dominated the Newport skyline for centuries.”

The High Sheriff added, ” The Cathedral does such an amazing job in hosting major services. It is such a wonderful place that I want to do all I can to support it during my year of office”.

Welcoming the news the Cathedral’s Fr Mark Soady said, ” We are very grateful to both The High Sheriff and Lord Kinnock for their supporting the appeal in this way.”
