The Dean, the Very Reverend Dr Richard Fenwick has announced the appointment of a new Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Cathedral’s Emergency Campaign to raise £1,500,000 this year for urgent roof repairs.
Mr John Child, Managing Director of Child & Child, a leading local accountancy firm has taken over as Chairman from the Dean. His wife, Mrs Judith Child, who stands down on April 8th as Her Majesty’s High Sheriff for Gwent, will become Vice Chairman.
Welcoming news of the appointment the Dean said, “I am grateful to both John and Judith Child for taking on these leadership roles within the campaign. They are not only strengthening the team, but are freeing me up to focus on the necessary day-to-day management of the Cathedral. I shall of course continue to be involved in the campaign’s urgent work to restore our unique Cathedral”.
Commenting on his appointment, John Child said “there is a great need to rescue Newport Cathedral from serious dilapidation and we are delighted to be able to play our part in raising the necessary funds to make this happen”.
A recent report by the Cathedral’s well-known architect, Michael Davies, stated that the roof was approaching a critical state and work should begin on repairing it as soon as possible. The cost of repairs is expected to be in excess of £1.5m.
